My unit 9 project was a music video on the artist Frank Ocean , i wanted to create a narrative like music video which showed a woman looking back at her life. I believe that this was successful as i followed the plan that i made and the music video itself received positive feedback.
I had many ideas of what i wanted to do for my unit 9 project , one idea was to create a ''Gorillaz'' music video with the art style that they used , however this was beyond my capabilities so i had to think again. I had a variety of ideas but then i came up with the idea of a frank ocean music video , i wanted to combine two songs together and make it narrative based music video as well. I was really excited about making another music video as i could work on what i could improve from last time.
Research is key in any project and deeply analysing the key characteristics based around whatever you are making will help you develop an idea for what you are making. My profiled target audience is 16-21. The reason why i chose this target audience is because this is most common age that watches music videos and when relating back to my research i deeply analysed what ages watch music music videos the most and 16-21 is the most common age and also Frank Ocean's style is very relatable to this age as my research states in target audience section. The project was successful for my profiled target audience because it helped me develop an idea of what i can furthermore research to build an idea around frank ocean.
Frank ocean rarely releases anything so deeply analysing his style and persona was key. I believe that my research was effective as it really helped me understand who frank ocean is. From understanding the roots of R&B to the music videos linked with Frank Ocean i dissected frank ocean bit by bit to truly understand how to make a music video that he would potentially create.
One really effective part of my research was analysing ''this is america '' by Childish Gambino. This helped me understand the use of encoding and how i can transition this into my project. In a whole my research was really effective in helping discover the spectrum around Frank Ocean. However i needed to analyse a little bit more about where i was influenced by the effects that i was intending on using ; this would of helped me develop an idea of what sort of music videos use these effects , this would of been effective as it could spiral out to all sorts of techniques and uses.
I needed to gather more secondary evidence in my research page , i gathered a lot of primary but lacked secondary. This meant that i didn't get a proper understanding of what the Frank ocean community expect in a music video if he was making one.
When it came to planning i had a strong vision in mind on what i was creating. The first thing i created was the project proposal. This was really helpful as it just gave a brief outline on what i was intending of making. Also it outlined what i was intending on doing and when by. I could keep going back to this throughout the project to help me remind me of what i was planning of doing and when by. So therefore my proposal was really effective in reminding of what is coming next. After i had completed the proposal i then outlined the treatment. The treatment was more of a specific explanation of what i was doing. This really helped me out cementing what i was doing and explaining how i was , from the narrative aspect to the editorial aspect i was able to dissect what i was creating. Once again this was effective as it helped me decide what i was doing and how i was doing but most importantly it helped me understand in a more descriptive and an explanatory way.
One really effective part of this project is that i had my own camera , this was effective as it allowed to me to film anywhere , anytime.
I then worked on my storyboards. My storyboard could of been a lot more effective in my opinion. I had the vision in my head but now it was about translating it onto paper and i have always struggled doing that but i was desperate for it to not happen again. I used my initiative and drew minimalistic pictures with a lot of writing. However when it came to my production element of the project my storyboard sections were not accurate enough. Making sure my storyboard is more precise is key for my next project because it just gives you a backbone to what your are doing when it comes to filming.
In conclusion to my planning i believe it was effective in certain ways however i need to be more descriptive when it comes to the storyboard , nevertheless the shot lists and treatment really helped build the foundations for this project.
The production side of my project was the most integral part of the creation that i was making. I was certain that all of the footage will be mine and that i will push myself to create challenging effects and camera techniques. As i said in my planning and my research i wanted to make sure it is a narrative based music video. This is because after my survey the statistics stated that people prefer narrative based music videos. The music video itself was really good in my opinion , i wanted make sure the shots were matched with the pace of the music and i believed i did that successfully. I used a wide range of effects and techniques to enhance the viewers experience when watching my music video. These techniques allowed me to produce a project that was clustered with effects and distinctive techniques.
There were no major problems with the development of the project. However I had to overcome some minor issues such as certain effects not going well however i managed to rectify these issues and keep my project at a good level of work. I also used lockdown as a time to pre-film my project as i knew certain aspects of the project such as the infinite zoom would take a while because i need as much shots as possible.
My use of music was also successful in helping to convey an emotion to the audience, the contrast between to the two songs was aimed at showing the audience the idea of emotions that the character was feeling. I believe this was effective as the feedback i received was saying about the transitioning in the two songs.
My editing side of my project was the most important as all the shots were having to be edited to get the style i wanted. I feel that it included all of the elements that I intended because the final piece came out really well. what i needed to work on is that I needed to test out certain edits before i tried them in the final piece as some didn't work , despite over coming it , it can be time costly at times. The skills I used during the creation of this project were a wide range of effects ranging from Infinite zooms to green screen. I worked with software's such as adobe after effects to premiere pro. I believe that my project shows that I have made progress so far this year with these skills but I'm keen to develop them further in future projects.
In conclusion i am really pleased with this project as it developed my skills in all aspects of film and television which can be helpful in the future. However i should be wary of attempting new effects before i try them on my final piece and also i need to be more specific in my research on who i am intending this project to be on. But in total i am incredibly proud of the work i have produced as i deliberately wanted to challenge myself in order to become more developed as a filmmaker and editor.
FORMATIVE : Uploaded your piece to your blogger Production page. Don’t forget film theory applied in your piece. Also… did you reach that target audience and how? E.g. what theory and research have you applied? Ensure that this is clear and focused in your explanations on your production page in the future.
